Changing the order files appear in, with View by Type

Is there any way to tweak the order that the files will appear in, when in
Explorer, I select the View by type option? For example, in one folder, I
did this, and I see pdfs at the top, followed by an html, a png, an mht, and
then my word files. I realize that each file type shows its files in
alphabetical order (i.e., the pdfs start with Cotton and India, and end with
The Nature and Properties of Sugar Industry). But can I alter what order the
file types appear in? Can I place Word files at the beginning, followed by
MHT files?

The table of files displayed is sorted by (your choice of)
columns, by a single click in the boxed label atop any
column. A second click in the same box resorts in
inverse order. A click in the box next door sorts instead
by that particular column. Each sort order remains displayed
until/unless you enact another sort order.

They sort alphabetically by the description for the type. For example, pdf
files are at the top because they are "Adobe Acrobat files". Excel files are
described as "XLS files". You might be able to get what you want by changing
the description in the registry but I wouldn't recommend it unless you know
what you are doing.

Thanks for replying. I see when I go to View>Details that I can click on the
categories and have the folder sorted by that category.

My question remains--can I change the order in which the file types appear?
If I want HMTL files first, then Word, then PDF files--is that possible? It
appears that Windows will put the file types in some type of order
(alphabetical?) and then invert that order, but will not allow me to
customize which file types appear before others.

Correct. First sort is by file name (exclusive of type) then a sub-sort by
file types with that same file name.

Yes. It's alphabetical, up or down. You can't change this, no, unless you
change the extensions, and that is really not a good idea.
