Changing registry to speed up network performance.

I have done all the standard things to try to speed up my performance,(ie
limit # of programs running, run all security software, clean out old & temp
files etc.), but my machine, (Win XP, 604 MHz, 192 mb RAM), is still running
slow. In Microsoft support, I read that if I changed size of the
TcpWindowSize registry, it would speed it up. My data in the TcpWindowSize
registry is 0x0003ebc0(256960). It says the valid range is 0 - 65635 decimal.
How do I modify the data to maximize the performance, or is it already there?
I am a novist at the registry, but do know how to back it up.

Bill:

I'm going to tell this to you straight, no offense intended: You don't
know what you're doing and you should leave your computer alone. Sorry
about that.

[TCP settings don't make a computer run faster.]

look for a util called CableNut, it'll help you tweak the tcp settings.

HOWEVER, in XP it should not really be necessary, I'd bet any tweaking
won't make much diff.

604 mHz, that must be a typo, no? way sloooooooow

192 MB ram; that's marginal, but not likely the cause of your preceived
slowness. unless it's swapping to the page file lots, which will slow it
down BIG TIME. open Task Manager (ctl-shift-esc), performance tab;
compare "commit charge - peak" to "physical memory - total", if it's
larger then you are/were swapping.

when you say slow, what is slow? the network link, or just the machine in
general? a util like DU Meter can help show if the network is indeed slow
or not.

Is it way slower than it used to be? that's a sign of a baddie hiding
somewhere, do the usual scans (ad-aware, spy-bot, panda anti-rootkit).

good luck.

According to your definition, I am swapping. What do I do now? The computer
is slower than it used to be, but I have run all spyware and antivirus that I
know.

Your specs ("604 MHz, 192 mb RAM") are simply too low to run XP. It's
possible to run extra lean, but you're really pushing it. If you
absolutely refuse to buy a newer PC, you could try adding RAM and paying
attention to the steps provided at:

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/slowcom.htm

*Make sure* there is no malware of any kind.

Step 13 is also helpful; see what all your startup programs/processes
are and eliminate those you don't need running at startup (e.g., Adobe
and QuickTime). You may have already done this, but since I don't know
how thoroughly you did it, I figured I'd mention it.

But anything lower than 256 MB RAM just ain't enough, my friend.

But if you're still determined...

You *might* want to turn off unnecessary services, too:

Finally, antivirus programs such as Norton and McAfee often slow down
PCs. I didn't catch what you were running. I would recommend AVG, Avast,
or Antivir (all free).

Hi Bill,

I agree with the others; messing in the Registry unless you really know what
you are doing can be disastrous.

If you feel you simply *must* do some tweaking, try the following site for
speed tests, and the one you may be interested in "Tweak Test". It will
give you suggestions on tweaking, along with being able to d/l "Dr.TCP". a
little app. that can make the Registry changes for you via a GUI, instead of
going into the registry yourself.
The aforementioned site:

The site is also just a good read.
