You're trying to make a direct linkage between hardware and software but
the two are not the same thing. Software, by it's nature, is a sequential
process while hardware is not constrained to be so. And yes, an external
'process', as you call it, *can* just 'magically disappear'. More
specifically, if it were not for hardware capturing the event (what you
called a 'process') it could go by completely unnoticed by a 'polling'
system because it could come and go in-between 'polls'. Now, capturing the
event is not, in and of itself, enough to be a hardware interrupt but it is
sufficient to demonstrate that hardware and software are different things.
