changing my computer name

Hi people, can anyone tell me how to change my computer name?
Its not the computer name that is in the system properties box, I've changed
that.
Its the name that the computer is registered to and that appears in the
general tab in the system properties box.
Does that make sense? I hope so!!

Basically I want to be able to send files without always showing my full
name in the file path.
My documents/(MY NAME)/whatever you get my meaning?

Hope someone can help, have spent ages mucking about trying to solve it
myself and its really p****** me off now! :)

To change the name of the registered owner which appears in System
Properties, General tab, read this KB article:

How to Change Name and Company Information After You Install Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310441/en-us

If you are not confident with Registry Editor, you may use this simple
script by Kelly Theriot MVP:

If you want to change the name which appears in the Documents and Settings
directory, you need to create a new user profile and duplicate all the
content:

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP,
you can use Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).

Hello,

Well, I think what you are trying to change is the name of the folder. So
just open up my computer (Start > My computer) then double click on the C
drive (that's where the folder usually is) > 'Documents and Settings' >
Right click on the name of the folder (this is probably going to have your
full name) and select 'Rename' then just type in a new name and press enter.
This is going to change the folder name so that when you send a file the
folder name that you just gave is going to appear, however it might spoil
some shortcuts though.

As for the registered owner if you don't want to mess with the registry or
don't want to use Visual Basic scripts then you can try a application called
RegScrub XP. Although changing the name and organization isn't its default
function it does provide the option of doing it.

After you get it, open RegScrub XP > Click on the 'Misc...' button at the
top right corner of the screen > In the window that pop's up under 'Tweak
Selection' select 'Change the Registered Owner...' and type in the new name
in the input box beside the 'Restore Default' button. Then just click on
'Modify' and the application will do the rest.
