changing LPT1 to EPP setting

I have a Lexmark Z51 and am using a Dell 8200 with XP
Home. The printer works, but soes not have bi-directional
communication. I changed the setting in the BIOS under
Integrated devices -> Parallel Port to EPP, but the
printer port still displays as ECP in Device manager and
I still do not have bi-directional communication.

How can I fix this problem?

I thought ECP was bi-directional ?

I am using the parallel port.

Are you connecting the Z51 to the computer using the parallel port or the
USB port?

That fix of changing the port from ECP to EPP came from
Lexmark's site. They put that in as the fix for this
issue when using the Z51 with XP.

In the BIOS settings, it was originally labelded as PS/2,
and even after changing the setting to EPP, it still
showed as ECP in Device Manager.

OK. I would try disconnecting the printer (power off both the computer and
printer), booting the computer, deleting the printer from the list, deleting
the port the computer uses from device manager. Next, use the utility from
the Lexmark site to clean up after the printer is deleted. Then, boot the
computer, change the BIOS settings to the recommended setting, save settings
and exit the BIOS setup. Allow the computer to boot.

The port should be detected and support installed. Now, install a fresh copy
of the Lexmark driver. (The other option is to use the Windows Unidriver).

If that brings no joy, it might be worth deleting the driver and cleaning up
and trying a USB connection.

Mike;

I'm still scratching my head.

Delete the printer. This time leave it disconnected and we'll see if the
port can be straightened out. Now delete the port from the Device Manager.
Enter the BIOS and set it to SPP or standard parallel port. Restart the
computer and see what has been set up.
