Changing Limited User to Guest

L

Larry Bohen

How do I (as Administrator) change a "limited user account" to a guest
account. As far as I know, the Limited User Account requires a password. I
don't want this user to have to have a password to log on.

Any implications of changing from a limited user to a guest that I need be
concerned about?

Hi Larry,

One, you can't change a limited user (or any user for that matter) to a
guest account.

Two, no account is required to have a password unless your are a) on a
domain and b) a policy has been set up to enforce this.

1. You can't. Just create a limited user without creating a password for
it. No accounts require a password unless you give them one. The
possible exception is the Administrator account in some installs of XP
Pro when it prompts you to enter a password for Adminitrator at first
startup.

2. Don't mess with the Guest account, it is NOT the same as a Limited
account, it actually has more permissions than a Limited account and is
sometimes used by the system. You can "disable" it (recommended) but
other than that leave it be.

In that the current Limited User Account was originally setup to require a
password, XP won't let me now remove the requirement for a password.

I guess I'll have to create a new Limited User Account, requiring no
password.

Is there a way to have the new Limited User Account have all the "stuff"
that the old one has? I.E. The user has customized his desktop, created
templates, ..... I don't want to make him re-create all his stuff.

Yes, do a search on Copying User Profiles (sorry don't have a link handy).
