Changing GUID ID's

J

Josh Leporati

We currently have about 6 of our comptuers out on our
domain that have the same GUID ID's, which are all f's.
We need to know a way to go into each computer and change
the GUID ID. Please post back if you need any more
information.

Another helper would be away to sniff in our domain all
the computers and get a list back of the comptuer name
and GUID id where we can locate them, but most of all
just need to know how to change it, thanks!

Hi there

The GUID is controlled by the SMBIOS and is stored in the motherboard
itself. Sometimes the setting is present, but can not be set due to the
motherboard lacking the appropriate software and hardware to do it.

Sometimes it can be set using a vendor-supplied utility. Dell provide a
utility called asset.com which is run from DOS to set their asset tag and,
possibly, the GUID. I don't know if this utility would work on other
vendors' PCs.

There's no way to "sniff" the network for the GUID since it is not sent over
the network (except in the case of a RIS installation). The GUID isn't part
of an Ethernet packet the way a network card's MAC is.

Systems Management Server (new version out soon) will allow you to inventory
this information. My preference is to use the SMBIOS asset tag as the
machine name for this purpose.

Regards

Oli
