changing for local domain

M

mac

Well I am in a pickle. I was told to setup a new domain
for the company and was told that it would not need to be
public so I setup it like domainname.local Now I am
being told that it needs to be domainname.com Please
tell me this can be done and please include the process
for converting a domainname.local to domainname.com
I have one 2k domain controller/file/dns server (pretty
much does everything) and 1 2k member server and 1 2k3
member/exchange 2k3 server
Thanks in advance.

While 2k3 has the ability to change domain names with the rendom utility, 2k
doesn't. It can be done but can be pretty involved, and if you're still in
Mixed mode (no go if you've changed to native) you can look at the article
below (also be aware that after the domain is set back to nt using netbios,
that all uplevel clients/servers will also have to be rejoined to the domain
again to reset them back to using netbios not Kerberos), and another one
basically involves creating a new domain with the name you want, migrating
everything from "bad" domainname to "good" domainname using ADMT v2. You
have a choice of either upgrading the domain/forest to 2k3 functionality
level and using rendom, using the article below, or doing some migrations.
Either way, if you decide to carry on with this, I'd read up on everything I
could and if additional questions post them, but this isn't something that
I'd just put out in an email.
thanks
