Changing File extensions

I download an .exe file yet when I click on it to open it, it has changed
from a .exe file to a zip.file? This seems to happen to all .exe files! what
is happening?

Some of your security software is changing the extension to
protect you from accidentally running a hostile exe. You
can think about before you rename it and run it.

What is the virus/malware status of the computer? If you think it is
clean, what did you use/do to determine this?

MVP Doug Knox has a fix for the .exe association:

However, this will not provide a permanent solution if the computer is
infected.
