changing default printer doesn't hold

Dianah

Hi ... using windows 2000. I have a few printers to
choose from. Every day I change the default printer.
When I reboot, it changes to another printer (the same
printer, everyday). Is there some secret to getting the
setting to hold. Is this a registry glitch or something.
Thanks in advance.

I have seen some Epson drivers that always set themselves up as default. Is
one model printer always the new default? Which model, where did you get
the driver?

You have several printers to choose from, are they network connection,
"local" (this can be to a Standard TCP Port, it's still local to the
machine) attached. If the default you want is a network connected printer,
the connection may be failing when the spooler is started, and the default
gets reset to the first enumerated device. If changing any local printers
so they are first in the list (use a special character * or $) changes which
printer is set as default, it would indicate an issue other than the
specific driver.

Since this occurs when you reboot, this implies that the default is changed
when the spooler service starts. You can test this without rebooting by
setting the default then stopping the Print Spooler from the service
control manager and restarting.

The registry key that holds the default printer is

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows

Thanks Alan,
The default printer that it keeps resetting to is a
network printer (HP Laserjet 1200), so I know it's not a
network issue. The printer is local - HP Photosmart - and
new, so maybe the driver needs to be reinstalled.

Thanks for suggesting the services method. It's a little
irritating to keep rebooting to see if any changes work.
I'll use that for my next attempt.

I've only done minor registry edits. When you refer to
the * or $, does that character go immediately in front of
the printer name and is it followed by a space or without?

Thanks so much for responding. Diana

I am getting about the same problem
I have a Windows 2000 server machine running in terminal server mode. It is set up as the print server as well
When a user logs on the terminal server, his default printer sometimes changes to a Zebra Z4M network printer.
So far nothing has worked for me.
Please advise..

D

Dianah

Well Alan ... what happened was interesting (none of the
following worked)

1. Registry: I added both a * and $ (different times of
course) and they worked when I restarted the service, and
worked with a different login, however, it went right back
to the network printer on reboot, so stop/restart the
printspool in services isn't a true test for this
particular problem.

2. Deleted/Add printer: I deleted the printer (after
resetting it as default). I got the warning (deleting
default printer). It chose another printer for default.
I went to choose a different printer as default and
suddenly there were two default printers selected
(something strange is going on). After some persistance I
ended up with only one default.

3. Driver: I downloaded, then installed the latest
printer driver for the HP Photosmart 7350. I set it as
default, stopped/started printer service, it held. On
reboot, the default switched back to the network printer.

So far, nothing "permanently sets" the local printer as
default with a reboot on this pc.

Any other thoughts (one that maybe involves the use of a
huge hammer).

Thanks for your suggestions though. I appreciate it. It
let me explore other avenues. Diana

Yes I know how to trick the system into multiple and no default printers.
It's a UI thing.

PS I have a big bat for the real frustrating issues. But actually debugging
the driver on this one my reveal the true problem. Give me a couple days.

Good morning Alan,
The bat idea sounds like a viable alternative, but I'll
wait for your genius (for this resolve) to kick in.

It's an HP Laserjet 1200 (no "n" or "e") PCL6. It's the
one that I "don't" want as the default printer but
is "very" persistant.

We're on a Novell Server (the Novell Client on my pc is a
version from January 2002 - I don't see the version being
reported. We use Groupwise 6 - if that helps). I don't
know which version the Novell server is, but it's probably
whatever version was available in 2002 as that's when the
company started and when the server was installed.

If I didn't already say so, I deleted both printers in
question - HP Photosmart 7350 and HP Laserjet 1200 PCL6,
then reinstalled both ... my attempt to rule out some
stuff.

I wish you luck and will watch for your posting over the
next couple of days.

Thanks so much for taking the time to work this through.
I appreciate it.

Sorry no luck. The default never changed to the 1200. I have the printer
connected to USB. I installed Netware client 4.9 but I could never see our
netware 5 system when running this client so I was unable to set the default

Thanks for trying, Alan.
It's certainly a mystery. The HP Photosmart is connected via USB while the
1200 is on the network.
Perhaps Hewlett Packard has a solution. I consider this on the premise that
someone else might have reported a similar problem and they (HP) worked out
a solution. I realize it's not likely, but might be worth a call. If you
do happen to hear of a solution, could you email me. Again, I don't think
that'll be likely either, but you never know. diana.howell at richardson

"local" (this can be to a Standard TCP Port, it's still
local to the
machine) attached. If the default you want is a network
connected printer,
the connection may be failing when the spooler is
started, and the default
gets reset to the first enumerated device. If changing
any local printers
so they are first in the list (use a special
character
*
or $) changes which
printer is set as default, it would indicate an issue
other than the
specific driver.

Since this occurs when you reboot, this implies that the
default is changed
when the spooler service starts. You can test this
without rebooting by
setting the default then stopping the Print Spooler from
the service
control manager and restarting.

The registry key that holds the default printer is

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windowsNT\CurrentVer s
ion\Windows

Hi ... using windows 2000. I have a few printers to
choose from. Every day I change the default printer.
When I reboot, it changes to another printer (the same
printer, everyday). Is there some secret to
getting
the
setting to hold. Is this a registry glitch or
something.
Thanks in advance.
Diana
