Changing Computer Name

I recently had to reinstall XP Prof... BEFOREHAND, my folder name was
"FIRSTNAME LASTNAME" now my folder name is "FIRSTNAME LASTNAME.OFFICE" ...
Somehow during setup I named the computer 'office'.
So, with that some programs i have used are trying to save (and sometimes
creating, the beforehand name directories, and I have to go in and change the
save path to the .OFFICE name.... Does anyone know if I can change the name,
or delete the OFFICE part of that name?
Please, I already tried the SYSTEM,COMPUTER NAME (which was blank) so that
didnt work, and I go down to the last line where it says "to rename this
computer or join a domain, click change" and when I click Change, I see the
name but it will not let me change it... The OK button never becomes avail..
Anyone have any suggestions?

The computer name shall not contain more than 15 elements and not
include space(s) or "; : " < > * + = \ | ? , , " - see the Help and
Support in your XP"!
The computer name is used in networking...

The computer name doesnt contain more than 15 elements... Its name is OFFICE,
and hence, when it setup my XP files, it named my docs and settings folder my
"FIRSTNAME LASTNAME.OFFICE) ... Previously my doc and settings folder was
just named my first and last name, with NO . anything...
What I am asking is, if I can rename the computer will it remove the .
OFFICE from my folder in doc and settings, and will it screw up the filing
system if I just rename the folder myself without the . OFFICE... I dont see
how I can change the name of the computer and read in my last post.. I
already tried using the control panel>system option and it is not avail to
change...

Users - Copy
Create a new account using the name that you want to appear in the user profile, for
example, C:\Documents and Settings\newuser. Then logon to newuser and logoff. Now
the newuser account and profile folder
(C:\Documents and Settings\newuser) exist. Logon to an admin account that is NOT the
admin account you want to copy from. If you have to, create a third account to do
this.

Then open the system control panel to the user profiles tab and copy the profile from
COMPUTERNAME/Administrator to COMPUTERNAME/newuser. Now logon to newuser and check
your files and settings.

Once you are sure that newuser is as you like it, you can delete the old account
(unless it is the Administrator account, then you should leave it alone for emergency
use). You can also rename newuser to whatever you want to appear on the Welcome
Screen.

Thx Brian A... I can try that.

I thought what may have happened was, being I didnt perform a reformat, just
a reinstall, the user name already existed and the setup created the SAME
user but put an extension of .OFFICE after the name, but, what makes it a
little more confusing is that it also created these files:
1- C:\Docs&Settings\Administrator.OFFICE
2- C:\Docs&Settings\All Users.WINDOWS
3- C:\Docs&Settings\Default User.WINDOWS
So my theory may not be right if these other directories (that were NOT set
up as user accts...These names dont show in User setup) because they have a
..WINDOWS tag instead of a .OFFICE tag.

Have you seen anything like that, or maybe I accidentally set up a network
system?
I dont run on a network, just a stand-alone.

I did create a new user for my son, and it did NOT add the .OFFICE name to
his account
