Changing Color of Template

Is there a way to change the overall color scheme of a downloaded template?
i.e. I downloaded one that I like but it is a green color - how can I change
that to orange?

Go to the slide design colorscheme taskpane, probably there is an orange one
there amongst the standard color schemes for that template. If not go to
Edit colorscheme at the bottom of the pane and change whatever color scheme
you like.

Depends how the template was created but this may work go to format > slide
design > color scheme and adjust the colors with edit color scheme (at the
bottom of the page) if the master has a picture background you will be out of
luck unless you have Photshop or the like
