Changing between templates on a mac.

Hi,

New to the whole template thing, I tried to create a template with my
preferred styles, headings, index, font, font size,... Works just fine... if
I start a brand new document.

However, if I start a new document without using my template, it is (off
course) still using the default template 'normal'. Changing this template
into my own template is not working, so I must overlook something I suppose.
I browsed a bit and found this solution (that does not work with me):
Got to tools ---> Template and Add-in ---> Attach template ---> click on
the template and open it and click 'automatically update' ---> click ok
Result nothing changes.
So I tried to click organizer ---> and copy all the styles of my own
template to the one I wish to change, overwrite them all --> click close
Result: nothing changes.
So another attempt was to add the template to the 'Global items and
templates' but again result: nothing.

I say nothing since the font did not change (and is different in both
templates, I'm sure!).
Also not that I created my own template on this mac, so no windows mac
compatibility problem here.

Ok, that's the problem. Now: what am I'm doing wrong?

And another question: macro's and template are correlated right? As in: you
can 'assign' a macro to a template and only that template. You can off course
copy them to other templates as well, but they are directly related to a
particular template. Correct?
