after changes have been made to the path variable via edit in the system
panel,
is there anyway to activate/register that new path value other than reboot?

The change you make is effective immediately for all newly
launched applications. It has no effect on pre-existing processes.

thanks for the reply
ok, but here's what happens on my xp pro, i thought the change i made
to the path variable, in system variables, would be effective immediately
for running programs in the directory added to the path variable

i add a new directory to the path variable via the system panel/environment
variables
-in the command prompt window, the new directory does not appear on the
listing from the 'path' command
-again, in the com prompt window, i can't run a program from the newly added
directory, see below
'someprogram.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
-i did double/triple check that i did add the correct path name for the
directory i want to add to the path variable

What you report illustrates what I said: Your change to the
path will NOT affect your pre-existing Command Prompt.
You must start a new Command Prompt to see the change.
