change drive letters

G

Geddy Lee

Hi Group,

I just bought myself a new computer. I am really happy because I finally
have something decent.
Question: I am running XP Pro, and somewhere along the line I managed to do
something that wasn't what I wanted. I partitioned my HD, my main being C:
, but my other partition is F: the DVD Rom ist E: and the CDRW is D: How
do I change the letters so that the 2nd partition is the D: Partition and
the other CD or DVD drive are then E. and F. respectively? All help would
be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Not sure if this will help, but in XP home you do it like this:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Select Manage
3. In the window that opens Click Disk Management
4. In the right pane locate the disk you want to change & Right Click it
5. Choose Change Device Letters & Paths
6. Click either "Add, Change, or remove"
7. Make your changes, then exit out by clicking OK twice.
8. The drive should now be displayed with the letter designation that you
assigned it.

Hopes this helps or at least points you in the right direction.

Sounds like the right directions to me....

Tip: Reassign the CD drive that is currently "D" to something down the
scale, like G or H, then change the others. When finished, reassign the
original "D" to its new letter.

I always re-assign the CD and CD-RW to X: and Y:
Many install programs used to say to insert the CD and run X:\setup where X
is your CD. This made it easier for my wife & kids to follow the
directions! <G>
