Change Domain on domain controller

G

Gary

I have a Windows 2000 domain controller. I would like to change the domain
name. I know in the NT world, that wasn't possible. Is it possible now?

I thought I remembered a screen where you can make a server not a domain
controller anymore. If I did that, I figured I could create a new domain.
Then join all the workstations to the new domain.

Thanks for any help.

As far as I know you cannot change a domain name once it
is created. All you can do is demote all of your Windows
2000 servers to member servers using dcpromo.exe (make
sure you tick the box 'This is the last domain controller'
in the wizard on your last DC as this will destroy the
domain) and repromote them creating the domain with the
appropriate name.

Don't forget that if you do this all User, Computer,
Organisational Unit, Group Policy settings will be
destroyed. You will effectively be creating a new domain
from scratch.

Hope this helps.

Matt.
