Certain windows do not remember size and view settings

Kev

My Documents, Control Panel and the search window are windows that do
not remember what they were last set at.

I can set them up they way i like but eventually they revert back to
what they were before i changed them.

examples:
Control panel will have the view set as icons but it will revert back
to details.

My Documents will keep details view but the size and position are
different

Search Windows will revert back to a smaller size.

They seem to have one thing in common. When they revert back, the size
for all 3 windows is 800x600.

Any guesses?

In my experience, that's just the way Windows is. Some
will remember, ome won't.

Delete these keys or values from the registry. This will reset many things like saved folder settings.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and delete the value
Shellstate

And these keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects2
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

Kev. One thing to try is to set the window the way you want and then
close with Alt-F4. That seems to keep the settings for me. Dingo

Windows XP is designed to only remember 400 individual
Windows. Use Tweak-UI, Explorer, Customizations to raise
the number to 8000+.

The Registry keys involved are BagMRU Size for Shell &
ShellNoRoam.

Windows remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding
this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.
