Many websites that i try to open with internet explorer
begin to load then the screen will go blank with no error
message. It flashes part of the website then disappears
with no explanation. Any help on this problem would be
appreciated.

Try this and see if it will help. If not, post back with details of what is
still happening, and you are getting any error messages please post the
exact wording as well.

Repair IE

You might try doing a repair of the IE, Open Control Panel | Add/Remove
Programs | Select and highlight your MS IE version in the list, then click
the Add/Remove tab and when the dialog box comes up, select the Repair
Internet Explorer and then click OK. Let it run the repair. It might also
be a good idea to install the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Machine if
you have not yet done that.

Hope this helps.

I have a similar problem. When I put a active program receiving real time
data in the background and then try to open certain web sites ie CNN or
Seattle times they will not complete opening. There are other web sites that
will open ie Seattle PI ( didn't know Gates was bias) tried your suggestion
and cannot find repair, I am using XP home. Like to find the culprit
thanks

If it was working before, have you tried to do a System Restore to a time
prior to the problem happening? If not, you might try that too.

You say you can't find repair. I don't have XP, but, I *think* it might be
available in the same location as the others, follow the steps below:

1. Close all Internet windows and programs, then the Click the Start tab
on the bottom task bar.
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click on Add/Remove Programs
5. Find and highlight your IE version in the list
6. Click the Add/Remove tab on the dialog box under the window
7. When the Wizard window opens you should see a Repair Internet Explorer
8. Click the radio button or box next to it, then click OK
9. Let it run the repair
10. Reboot you computer

If you need further help please post back. :)

Jan,

XP users normally don't have setupwbv.dll so they can't do a repair.

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

There is no question I need help on this issue. Someone has told you about
xp and repair so I won't repeat.
I have thought about restore. It was a fair amount of time that I did not
have this problem. I'd still like to find the cause. Someone somewhere knows
the answer.
thanks

This sounds similar to the Red-X symptom I just saw with Trout's site:

< http://www.lickingcounty4hband.com/ >

FWIW here is what I wrote about that:
<quote>
BTW something interesting seems to be happening perhaps as a result
of your marquee scrolling: I consistently got a lot of Red-X for your
buttons with my usual cache checking setting of Every visit...
In order to show them all at the same time I had to switch to Never
and do some refresh commands. Fortunately they are all cacheable
so once they are loaded I can switch back to Every visit...
</quote>

It's not clear from your description that you really have a problem
that requires fixing. As I indicated it sounds to me more like something
that you need to work around somehow and usually the simplest
workaround for symptoms with known cause is: "Don't do that." ;)
But in case you can get some benefit from a pseudo-repair here is
what I have replied to XP users about that option:

<quote>
Normally (pre-malware) we would suggest an IE Repair.
That option doesn't even exist for most XP users any more
but in case it helps here is what I usually suggest to them
as a simulation. You can find longer lists from others
by searching this newsgroup.

If you installed IE6sp1 before you installed XPsp1 you should try
an IE Repair anyway. E.g. Run... (press Win-R and enter:)

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Alternatively, I have been suggesting to XP users that they could simulate
the IE Repair that W2K users can do by making a list of all the references
to DllInstall and DllRegisterServer in FixIE.inf

For example, here is the list that W2K use of that file would imply:
(excerpt from previous post)

<excerpt>
regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

What that represents is the set of re-registrations which
FixIE.inf indicates would be done for Base.W2K.AddReg

N.B. that neither mshtmled.dll nor actxprxy.dll have an entry point
called DllInstall and hence the /i option can not be used for them.

Neither msjava.dll nor shell32.dll are referred to by FixIE.inf
but those are two other modules which are often suggested to XP users
as needing re-registration for repairing in various circumstances.

Note that such re-registrations are normally done by an IE Repair
during a boot while nothing is running so at the very least I think
that it would be best to ensure that iexplore.exe is not active in your
task list. (Close all visible IE windows and then check that the
iexplore.exe is not in the list of Processes in Task Manager.
Ctrl-Shift-Esc,Ctrl-Tab,i,i,...)
</excerpt>
</quote>

Good luck

Robert
