placed a blank cdrw in the drive before i started. It has
done this everytime I have gone to write a cd using xp's

Hi,

Right-click the drive in Windows Explorer, click the recording tab. Make
sure the option to enable recording on this drive is checked.

Thanks Gareth.

Yellow Page>Computer Repair (or the equivalent in your country).
Seriously, just take the box somewhere reputable and let them fix it
for you.
