CDRW and DVDRW Drives No Longer Available in Windows Vista Busines

Hi:
Can someone please offer me some assistance. I have been running Windows
Vista Business on my PC since March and a new problem just occurred. Both of
my optical drives (a Sony CDRW and an LG DVDRW) have suddenly and without
warning stopped working in Windows. The windows device manager shows both
drives but in the properties window it indicates that even though the drivers
are installed the devices have failed to start. I have uninstalled and
reinstalle the device drivers several times and attempted to upgrade the
device drivers and nothing seems to help. Using a non windows diagnostic
tool I am able to read and write to both optical drives but windows vista
cannot. I have tried clean boot and safe boot and still neither drive works.
I have restore windows to a previous iteration from a date that I know I
successfully used the cdr to install an application and still no joy. Does
anyone have any idea how to get this fixed without reinstalling windows and
all of my applications? Help!

try this first:
put a boot cd of any operative system, check if system can boot from cd.
obviously, do this from dvd and cdrom units.
on the other hand, i suppose you have some registry error so, why not
to try system restore?,

Does the BIOS see / recognize them?
Are they both set to Slave? ( or Cable Select )

Thank you for your response to my posted question. I have been able to boot
the computer using a cd. I have also done several system restores to dates
prior to the cd not working. The cd will boot, the bios recognizes the cd
and dvd and identifies both and windows recognizes and identifies them in
device manager. However, device manager has a yellow exclamation mark on
both cd and dvd icons and the error message is "This device cannot start.
(Code 10)". Hope somebody knows what's going on and can provide a solution.

Thank you for your response to my posted question. Yes the Bios sees both
optical drives and identifies them properly, I can boot an operating system
from the optical drive and windows device manager recognizes them and
identifies them properly, it just gives the error message "This device cannot
start. (Code 10)". Hope somebody can help.
