CDROM drive appears but inserted CD not recognized

I've had my Compaq 1510US notebook for over a year and a
half and it's worked fine until just recently.

In the past couple weeks I noticed that while the
CDROM/DVD device appears in the "My Computer" explorer
window, when I insert a CD the drive starts to spin up,
then stops and you can't see any contents of of the CD.

HOWEVER, if I put the CD in the drive and reboot, then
when the system is booted, the CD contents are there (but
I can't take it out and put another CD in and have the
contents recognized).

I'm uninstalled the device and rebooted. This does NOT
fix the problem.

I don't think it's a realistic workaround to reboot each
time I want access to the contents of a CD.

I've seen all sorts of people who seem to have had the
same sort of problem. Haven't seen a solution posted
that works.

There must be someone that's fixed this without reloading
XP.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Greg
