i can play audio cd's & data cd's in the cd-rw fine.
(HL-DT-ST CR-RW GCE-8481B) however, when i go to save
something to the drive - it tells me to 'insert a
writable disc to continue.'
this is a new problem. i'm using the same cd's as i have
in the past. everything is fine in device manager. what's
my problem?! H E L P !

Possibly you are "finalising" a cd-r after recording to it - this is a
setting in your burning software, (if so clear the "finalise disk" check
box), in which case you cannot add more recording "sessions" to a
"finalised" cd-r-r/w. (if using a cd-rw disk you could erase and re-use
it). Possibly the drive has failed, swap it out to exclude that
possibility.

If recording a music/cd audio, all tracks must be recorded on the first
session/track, for older home hifi equipment to be able to "see" all the
tracks. Your PC can see all music tracks on a multi-session cd, most older
hifi's can't.
