CD-ROM reads as a Hard Drive under "My Computer" advice/suggestio

I don’t know if this is a windows xp pro problem or my aa8 3rd eye mobo
problem, or perhaps a bit of both. So here is what is happening

My cd-rw is properly listed in the device manager under “DVD/CD-Rom driveâ€
and in the computer management under disk management, as it should be.
However, in “My Computer†under “Hard Disk Drives†the cd rom drive shows up
as a hard disk drive with a hard disk drive icon. With a disc in it I get
that annoying little “Low Disk Space†prompt bubble from systray for as long
as I have the cd in the drive.

I realise I can disable the low disk space prompts but that doesn’t fix the
root of the problem.

Here is what I have tried to do to fix the problem myself:

First I tried removing the cdrw from the device manager. Hoping that by
uninstalling it and reinstalling it would alleviate the problem. No luck as
it continued to have the same problem.

Next I tried flashing new firmware onto the cdrw from diamond data. Also
uninstalled Nero just in case it was that software like direct cd making it
read like a hard drive Again no luck.

Then I tried to change the drive letter manually via Computer Management>
Disk Management> right clicked cd-rom to change drive letters. Only then
would it appear as the new drive letter under devices with removable storage
in my computer with the proper cdrom icon. But as soon as I insert a cd it
returns to the hard disk drive icon under Hard Disk Drives in My Computer.

I have also updated the bios via Abit’s Flash Menu and again this had little
effect.

Installed the long awaited windows service pack 2 for xp. Some progress
because now the drive appears under removable storage disks in my computer
after I reboot or turn the computer on. That is until I stick in a disk then
it goes back to Hard Disk Drives and the low disk space prompt continues.

I have even plugged in a completely different brand of cd rom only to find
that it does the same thing. So I now know its not a problem with the actual
cd rom rw drive itself. Also not that it would matter but the jumper is set
on cable select.

I have taken a look at the bios and didn’t really see anything that I could
enable disable that might help my situation. Hence why I suspect it could be
an xp problem.

Please let me know if you have experienced similar problems and all
suggestions are welcome!!!

My system specs are:

3.2 p4 Prescott, 1024 Corsair ddr2 ram, 160gig SATA Seagate hd, all wired up
to the Abit AA8-3rdeye 775 /i925 , Diamond Data CDRW 40x16x10, Bios Version:
i925x-W83627-6A79FA19C Bios Build Date 06/25/2004. WinXp Pro w/ SP2

Thank you in advance
