CD ROM not accessible

Hi

Just installed Win98se on a friends machine, I've been using the CD ROM
drive to install drivers etc, but all of a sudden the drive gives a message:
"D:\ is not accessable. The device is not ready" So I can't carry on with
the upgrade.

I get no probs in device manager, plus the only info on the drive is that
it's 54X, no model or make info, and the driver is installed off the Win98se
disc.

run the install floppy.
If you stop installation at cd rom support(no installation)
use fdisk/mbr to clear the boot record, then use fdisk
to remove all partitions from HD, then create a primary
partition ,and claim the whole HD for that.
Use F4 to check, and try F2 to make that partition
bootable.
Then reboot ,and again stop with cd rom support.
At this point format /s/u c: .
Then copy the whole cd to a directory on the harddisk.
search for setup.exe,and run that.
This should do it.
You can keep that cd directoy and point WIN to that,
anytime it asks for the CD.

The above advice will blank your system and reformat the hard disk - not
sure this is what you wanted to do as you have just re-installed the
operating system?!? I would check all obvious things - check all cables on
the CD-Rom are connected firmly. Check there is not a CD stuck in the drive.
Try removing the CD-ROM from the device manager and reboot to add it again
(automatically or manually). What was the last thing you installed before
the CD-ROM stopped working? Was it some kind of IDE tool or hard disk
controller software/driver??

clean the CD? is it one particular CD or do all have problems with that
drive? try a CD lens cleaner. make sure the IDE cable is firmly plugged in -
if its been twisted badly try a fresh cable.

Hi
I added AVG 7 which would run on boot up, so I uninstalled from add&remove,
but still the same.

I've tried 2 CD lens cleaners, but they wont start because of the prob. If I
removed the device and restart, it will play a CD audio, but if I eject it,
it wont play again.
So I've tried removing the device the and after rebooting putting in the
lens cleaner, but still no joy.
