CD-rom not accessible for user with admin rights

Can anyone help me with this problem as I have searched nearly everywhere for
the last 2 weeks, but have not found anything (even windows knowledge base).

I have a problem with my toshiba laptop running windows xp pro.
I am the owner and have full admin rights, my girlfriend also uses the
computer. I set up an account for her also with admin rights. I have also set
up another account with just 'user' rights.

The problem is that I am the only one that can access the CD/DVD-rom drive.
When anyone else clicks on the drive (d:), a dialog pops up and says 'D:\ is
not accessible. Access is denied.'
I'm not sure when this happened, but it wasn't always like this.
I know the drive works perfectly fine as I use it all the time.

Can anyone help me with this problem as it seems I am the only one who has
ever had this problem as I have searched countless help forums, websites,
microsoft and still no solution?
Thanks in advance.

Is there no-one who can help me with this one? I know its a difficult one but
surely someone must have the technical know-how here? Please?

Hi blinko

I am guessing a bit here, but hope it might help. . . I think maybe you
either need to enable Windows Simple File Sharing or else set specific
permission for other users to access the drive.

Open any folder window, go to Tools/Folder Options/View and look at the
setting for "use simple file sharing" right at the bottom of the list.
I'm guessing you have this unchecked at the moment. This might be for
very good security reasons; but if you don't mind all the users of the
computer having access to everything except the files in your personal
profile, you could check it and see if that solves your problem. If you
right-click on the option you can get a pop-up explaining exactly what
simple file sharing is.

If you want to keep it unchecked and be able to choose who has access to
what: right-click My Computer and choose Manage. The Computer Management
window will open. Click on Help > Help Topics, then expand Shared
Folders and the How To. . underneath. The first topic, How To Share a
Folder or Drive, is the one you want.

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

Hi Nightowl,

Well guess what? It did the trick, she now has access to be cd-rom drive!
I never thought it was so simple, but your first suggestion worked.
Now the only thing is it still doesn't work for others with just 'user'
rights. I have another account with this user setting and the simple file
sharing is checked but still no access to the cd-rom drive. It's not a big
hassle but would be great to figure it out.

Thanks again.

Hey blinko, that's great! At least we're on the right track. . .

I don't know if this will work, but you could try un-checking simple
file sharing again and follow my suggestion #2, to use Computer
Management. Have a look there at the permissions on the drive; it might
be that it's set to just you, or the Administrators group. If so, you
could add "Users" too, or more simply just set it to "Everyone" -- the
How-tos under the Help topic explain how.

Then try logging in as your user and see if it's worked. If it has, you
could keep it that way, with simple file sharing unchecked, as that
sounds like what you had originally? Or if you prefer, re-enable simple
file sharing and see if the drive access "sticks". . . whichever
security setting you're more comfortable with. I'm no expert at these
things, but that's what I'd try next.

Hope this helps :) Let us know what happens!
