CD-ROM no longer reads software

In recent months, whenever I insert Microsoft Streets 2002 in the
CD-ROM drive, I get nothing... not even an error message.

- Music CD works fine
- Photo CD works fine
- Backup data files work fine

Non of the Microsoft Works 2003 can be read

I just received a new CD Microsoft Streets 2006 and this morning tried
again with the setup disc. Same problem, it will not read.

Tried the command Startup>Run>d:\setup_ST.exe
the computer says d:\is not accessible Incorrect function

Not accessible? It is for music, for pictures, for data !
Incorrect function, that appears to be the problem for software

What is my problem and how can I correct?

Just as an added detail, in April I installed Registry Mechanic. It has
cleaned up tons of stuff in the Registry.

Microsoft Works 2003 (Microsoft Streets 2002 is one of its components)
is one of the software packages that was already installed in the
Computer when new. Did the Registry Clean up action eliminate an
essential entry? That's what I tought and so I purchased a new software
item which is Microsoft Streets 2006... but no, it will not work!

If you do a search on Google Groups Advanced in
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general and use the search term "registry
cleaner" you will get hundreds of threads telling you exactly what most
techs think of them. Short answer: they do more harm than good.

If your registry cleaner has an Undo feature, I suggest you use it.
Since you are having issues with only this one program, this is not a
hardware problem. Contact the tech support for MS Streets and Trips if
undoing whatever you did with the registry cleaner doesn't work.

Just put in a different CD for a none Microsoft software (it's a Fax
Tools Plus 7) setup disc. And it will not read it (I have this Fax
program already in my computer). Therefore, it is not:

A Microsoft software problem and I see no point in spending time with
Microsoft.
It is not a registry acceptance problem, at least, of a specific
software

Could it be in the Bios?

Try a CD drive cleaner disc.. if that does not work, you CD drive may be
failing..

Went into the Bios and specified CD-ROM as first boot, saved that.

Restored the Windows Registry via Windows (and not via Registry
Mechanic). This took maybe over 5 minutes !

Put in the Fax software CD and it opened up without difficulty.

Put in the Microsoft Streets and Trips 2002, got message that it wanted
the setup disc (this program is part of Microsoft Works 2003 which was
installed in the computer when purchased). Put Microsoft Works 2003
disc 1. Didn't work.

Put in the recently purchased Microsoft Streets and Trips 2006, first
attempt unsuccessful. Second attempt successful with the setup disc 1.
During installation, was asked for the Run disc (# 2 disc), put that in
and the installation was quickly completed. Program was tested and
everything is fine.

Conclusion, the Registry Mechanic shortcut on my desktop was sent to
rest in a shortcut Folder!

Thanks for your assistance.

You might want to uninstall Registry Mechanic completely..
