CD Rom Drive Stopped Working After Windows Update

I have a CD/DVD drive and I can r/w DVDs with no problems. I can no longer
r/w CDs though.
This started happening after a recent 'Windows Update'.
If I have a CD in the drive and boot the computer it will hang and not start
up until I open the drive.

Just for grins I took my hard drive out and put in a clean drive. I was able
to boot the XP install disk installed XP from CD. And then installed
everything from 'Windows Update' and NOTHING else. There were no errors
encountered while installing any of the updates.
My 'Designed for Microsoft Windows XP' machine stopped accessing the CD ROM.
There are no error messages given at any time whill trying to access the CD.
The device manager indicates the drive is working properly though it refuses
to access CDs.

I have checked my vendors web site (HP) for any CD driver updates of which
there are none. And have since installed a new version of the BIOS and still
XP refuses to access the CD.

I was going to try uninstalling SP2 from XP but then it indicatated about 30
program may stop functioning if I did so.

I'm really looking to Microsoft to fix what ever broke but I'm open to
suggestions on getting the drive working. I wish I could be assured there is
a Windows Update in the pipe to fix this problem.

What's next?

Do you have a System Restore point dating to before these troubles started?
Or, can you simply remove the problematic Windows Update? It is doubtful
that your hardware was damaged. Also, you may have gotten a driver update
from MS. Have you looked to see if you can revert the current driver for the
device to an earlier one?
Any one of these stands to correct the problem, provided it is not just
coincidence and you really do have malfunctioning hardware.

CORRECTION:
Any one of these stands to correct the problem, provided it is not just
coincidence and you *do not actually* have malfunctioning hardware.
