CD-ROM Drive not functional under full Windows XP PRO

Since I took my PC ( Compaq Presario SR2150NX Desktop ) from Vista Home to XP
PRO SP2, my cd-rom drive does not function as it should under full Windows.
If I reboot into safe mode, it is functioning as it should ( reads, writes ).
Any suggestions as to what within full Windows could be interfering with the
functionality of the drive ? Device Manager does not show any errors.

Thanks,
Dave

How about refreshing the driver for your CD-Rom drive? Sometimes using
a generic driver solves the problem.

I went through Device Manager to do the delete and re-install. Nothing
changed. Still looking for what could be in XP PRO SP2 that might be
blocking the use as opposed to when I boot in safe mode.

What does 'not functioning as it should' mean?

The drive cannot read or write CDs as it should under full Windows, but
functions fine under safe mode. So, when I put a CD in the drive, I expect
the software to be launched from the CD, or also when using an audio CD, it
should play. Right now, it does not, so I am investigating individual pieces
of software that startup immediately. That will include part of the Catalyst
Control Center ( BDARemote ) and the realsched.exe which checks for updates.
I will update when I have something.

Thanks,
DC

I went through the MSCONFIG procedure with the tasks listed undet the startup
tab, and after unchecking each one except for Java scheduler, I still have
the same problem where the drive will not function under full Windows.
Contacted the retailer online and waiting for a response.

Have you tried right clicking on the CD, selecting properties and checking
settings there?

Yes I have done so. Seems to be ok, according to people I have spoken with.
I will be going back to MSCONFIG and the Services tab or the Services.msc
window to see if I can do the disable thing one-at-a-time. Bit like needle
in a haystack, but I want to get this drive working. thanks for your
suggestion.

Here is the solution:

I was on with HP tech in chat and she was close, but on wrong device. Here
is the procedure that corrected my problem:

_____________________________________________

Goto Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager.

Click on View, choose devices by connection.

Expand the ATI IDE Controller
Expand the Primary IDE Channel
Make sure ATAPI DVD A DH16AYH is listed under the expanded IDE Controller.

Double Click the Primary IDE Channel
Click on Advanced Settings Tab
Change the transfer mode for Device 0 from "DMA if available" to "PIO only"
Click OK

____________________________________________

I am back to normal use of the Cd drive now. Thanks for any assistance,
tips, knowledge, etc. rendered. Much appreciated !

I should make clear that this is a temporary band-aid to get me going until I
can replace the drive, then get the new drive back to DMA.

Nope, sorry. Never been to Florida. Common name, though. There were three
people including myself with the same name where I used to live. Caused me
no end of financial problems when one of them started running stuff up on one
of my credit cards. It stopped after the police contacted me and they went
after one of the other two. $900 worth of motorcycle parts is not my buying
pattern. It just took a while to clean up. PITA !
