cd-rom and dvd gone

my cd-rom and dvd drives disappeared from my computer, i
tried to install it again under add new hardware and it
doesnt show anything for a cd-rom or dvd drive. it is not
listed under device manager or anything it just
disappeared. i have no viruses on my computer. PLEASE
HELP!!!! thanks

Hey,
You might have missed out on the jumper configuration of
your drives. Your system might be looking at two
master/slave drives at the same time and it didn't
registered. You have to replace the jumpers according to
the settings such that if they're connected on single
cable, one must be a master and the other one a slave.
CHeck-out the manual for this. Then try and reseat the
data cables.

Over the weekend,my CD drive disappeared. It looks like

it was Kazaa related. A Norton scan stopped and a screen
came up advising that recently installed software may
contain a virus. I called Dell Tech Support and was
guided through a system restore and an XP reinstall. It
worked. The CD drive returned. I also deleted Kazaa and
downloaded AD-WARE to get rid of tracking cookies.
