CD-ROM and CD-RW

I am puzzled right now because I've done this multiple times and always
worked for me. It all started when I switched the CD-ROM from my computer and
replaced it with a DVD-ROM such that I could have a DVD-ROM and DVD-RW in my
computer. Now my computer, Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2, does not
find them!
1) I've done multiple permutations with the jumper settings (CS,MS, SL)
2) changed the secondary IDE cable

Any tips?

To resolve your issue, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

Use 80-wire IDE cables, set all drives to CS.

That's way overkill Carey, and dangerously bad advice! It could very
well be a drive select or hardware issue which a repair install won't
fix and in the case of a disk not being properly recognized could run
the risk of data loss and file corruption, if they were even able to
boot the XP CD at all at this point!

I would have to confer. I tried 80-wire IDE cables and still did not work. I
guess there is no easy solution. Right? I am considering saving as many files
and do a clean XP installation. Thank all!

I still think it may be a hardware problem. Does it work if you put the
old CD drive back in and eliminate the new drive?

Yes, either the CD-ROM or DVD-RW work just fine if I hook it up as slave in
the primary IDE. However, neither one are seen when hooked up to the
secondary IDE which I find very strange. I find it quite odd that this would
happen only because I tried replacing the CD-ROM with DVD-ROm such that I
could have both DVD-ROM and DVD-RW !

A repair install will do nothing to solve this problem. It is hardware
related as I suspected. Do any drives work on the second IDE channel? Is
it perhaps disabled in BIOS? I'd look around in there first.
