I have lost several files on a CD/RW due to corruption. I
discovered several utilities on Google that can find the files OK
but all are feature-crippled so I can not actually recover anything.

Any freeware that actually works?

CDCheck does pretty well as long as you realize that not all errors are
recoverable by anything.

I've had good luck with Isobuster free (vers 1.5)
www.isobuster.com

I tried Isobuster but it is crippleware. Have you actually succeeeded in
recovering damaged files without paying for registration?

It has worked fine for me. The "Locked" features are all concerning DVDs as
far as I could tell.
I recovered files from several "bad" cd s and CD-RWs afew months ago. I
notice from the site that he has done a "point" upgrade but still offeres
the free features.

<clip> "OhnO the Clown" sez:

Mia culpa Rod, tho I do not remeber rattling your cage, the link and advise
were to annothers post and well meaning. I now remember why I have remained
a "lurker" for most of the last four years. So, back to my cell. OhnO the
Clown

Thanks for the info OhnO but I STILL can't find a link to a version that is
not crippled.
Have you got a precise URL for a FREE version of isobuster?

Please stick around, any offence from my post was against the idiot that
phoned me out of bed, always expecting bad news, not someone saying nothing,
and not even long enough to give me the change to call him a f*cking etc.
No offence at all against you, I should have used a smiley I guess, because
AFAIK Henk and SOS are thousands of km/miles away from eachother (USA/the
Netherlands). Your post gave me the opportunity to give the links to both
their sites, which are both great in different ways.
My apologies if you thought I was offended, again, I wasn't and I'm sure
both SOS and Henk aren't.

No good. The link you gave is merely a link to the software
provider's web page. Not freeware.

My problem is solved now. I used a cracked version of a different
program. I hate doing it but there was no genuine freeware to do the
job I needed.

As we both hate cracking things I searched around a bit.
Found version 1.3 of Isobuster here: http://tinyurl.com/55p58
Direct download: http://www.multimedia-freaks.de/download.php?id=5
It's freeware :)
