CD/DVD Drives will not work with blank media

I have 2 sony dvd drives that both will not work with blank media, either DVD
or CD. When a blank CD is inserted into either drive it give this error
message:
(Drive Letter):\ is not accessible incorrect function

When a blank dvd is inserted either drive will give this message:
Windows cannot read from the disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could
be using a format that is not compatible with Windows.

The drives work fine reading disks of all types. Also i tired to check if
burning is turned on in the properties under the burning tab for each drive.
The problem is, under the drive properties there is no burning tab, and no
other place to enable or turn off burning.

I have the same problem, this article will add the recording tab under
properties but even after doing this and using the built in windows burning
software, I get to the point where it says please insert a blank disc and
there is one in there but it still will not recognize it. But here is the
article to add the recording tab to the burner.

If you figure the rest out let me know.
Thanks.

I have a similar problem
After burning CDs with no problem, suddenly I cannot do this any more.
The recording tag is there and initially it was not checked to enable
copying.
I checked it, but still the cd won't burn and when I check back the box
to enable has mysteriously become unchecked again.
Also the whole system freezes up, after this failure.
I cannot remove the cd and I cannot even switch off properly.
Any help would be most welcome as this is driving me nuts.

The drives seem to be doing a similar thing, and will take away the check in
the burning enable box. Also when i try to use nero to burn a disk, it locks
up like it did before. Once thing i noticed, is that the drives say they are
SCSI drives in their name/ hardware description. The drives are both ATA
drives so i would not expect that to be normal. Anyways, no real progress
other than having the recording tab.

Well i was able to find a solution to the burning problem. On my motherboard,
there is a controller that is called jmicron raid. It works with ide devices
and is probably a way to set up 2 ide harddrives in raid. Anyways, when
installing the drives for my motherboard, the program was installed called
Jmicron Raid, or JRAID in the add/remove programs list. the program would not
start in windows so i was not able to see if i could configure it in windows
for the drives to function normally. Anyways, i unistalled this
driver/management app, restarted and the drives are now just stating the
model number and brand under properties and the hardware tab. I was able to
succesfully burn a cdr with the windows utility. Nero still locks up, but im
gonna try to reinstall that, as i know the main issue is fixed. So anyways,
if u have any raid driver, for your ata channels, look into that. Also check
if you drive is labled something you know its not.

I was able to get the drives working. My computer has the ability to run raid
on the ide channels. The driver for this was installed in windows meaning
that the computer was trying to run raid on two dvdrw drives. This is why the
drives were labled SCSI. The driver app on my computer is called JMicron
Raid, and once i removed it, the drives regained thier correct hardware
naming. I can now burn on the drives without problems. What i would suggest
looking for first, is under the hardware tab, for each drives properties.
Most Optical drives are ide, and if it says SCSI CdRom, or something with
SCSI in the title, then it is likely taht that is the problem. So remove any
raid controller for your ide channels and then restart and u should be able
to burn cds.
