CD / DVD doesnt appear in device manager

A mate of mine, he upgraded his sons PC from 2000 to XP the other day

Only prob is, the BIOS detects the cd/dvd, BUT it doesnt appear in My
computer, or device manager.

We've tried the upper/lower filter thing, didnt work.

We've tried the cd/dvd fix from Doug Knox's site, didnt work.

We tried autofix, but then the drives have to appear first, before you can
see if autofix fixes them ! So, this didnt work anyway.

Any other ideas anyone??

Thanx

Which seems to imply that windows hasn't recognized the device yet.
So you could (possibly) try launching the New Hardware wizard, and point it
to the c:\windows\inf folder, if necessary.

"upper/lower filter thing"? Come again?

Well, yeah, most likely because the device isn't even recognized by windows
yet.

The cd'/dvd was working PRIOR to XP being installed.

It was AFTER he had upgraded to XP, the cd/dvd disappeared, and never came
back

I'll get him to do what u posted, and see how it goes

Thanx

I know. That still suggests it is a *windows* (and windows driver)
problem. Windows 2000 is not Windows XP (different animals).

Yup I know theyre different.

Nope he tried your suggestion nothing happened.

Nothing else to select

OK, so I presume you mean he was able to launch the New Hardware wizard, but
am not sure exactly what happened when he did that. ??

Here's something else to check:
in BIOS, did he select the option to allow Plug and Play (or at least make
sure it is still selected?)

Umm I dont think he changed anything in the BIOS, since as previously
posted, both cds were working BEFORE the upgrade. The BIOS knows theyre
there, but Windows doesnt know they were there

He's fixed the prob now, the other prob, was the PC he was trying to do a
clean install on (the floppy was knackered for the SATA drivers).

Which is why he upgraded instead of doing a clean install (which didnt
work). BUT, I managed to find a zipped VIA SATA file on the msgn.org site.

Which finally did the trick. He followed the info in the txt file in this
file, and added the lines needed (to txtsetup.sif) to a copy of the XP CD,
then reburned the CD.

Then he was able to get the install to recognise the hdd, so he could do a
clean install !

Oops that should be the msfn.org site
