cd drive corrupted

when i put a cd in my cd drive tray, it doest read it or do a thing, it says
the either the drive is corrupted or missing. does any1 know how i can fix
the problem?

Can you see the drive in explorer?
Have you removed the drive in Device Manager and rebooted?
Do you see it in the system BIOS?
How old is the drive?
Is this true for all CDs? (Music, commercial stamped, self-created..)
Checked for loose cables inside the computer?

It is posible the drive is dead.
