Cd delayed response

When trying to activate a cd in my pc for say, Diablo2or
Quake2, (running xp with 256meg ram) I wait sometimes up
to 2 minutes for the cd to load.

This problem has only started recently and not aware of
any new software installed at the same time as the
problem started.

I have tried uninstalling the cd drive, updating the
drivers etc to no avail.

Have you tried using a CD-lens cleaner disc on the drive?
