Catalyst 3.8 and high end Viewsonic monitors....

F

Falkentyne

Just to settle the ghost once and for all, since I just threw
down $600 on a P225F ...

Who here *HAS* a viewsonic high end CRT (NOT LCD) monitor (like P220f,
P225f, high end "P" or "G" series), and Catalyst 3.8, and has had no
problems with them? (no strange behaviour, monitor deaths, sync
errors, etc). Please only reply if you REALLY do have one of these
monitors.

If I change to a Radeon 9800 XT (or the successor) from my Ti 4600, I
do NOT want anything to happen to my $600 monitor...not all of us gets
money from parents anymore, you know....

<Gibs> When you kill 6 people in Unreal Tournament
it is "MonsterKill", In Quake3 it is "Excellent",
in Counter-Strike it is "Kicked by console"

Why on earth would you suspect that any currently popular graphics
card would damage your monitor - high end or not?

Where have you been for the past couple of weeks? There was a widely
discussed post a while back in which someone claimed, without proof,
that something like 183 monitors had been destroyed by Catalyst 3.8
drivers, with some bogus but superficially plausible claims
about the mechanism by which it did this.

This received sufficiently widespread circulation that ATI felt
compelled to issue a press release concerning the matter.

I run a P95F with ATI 9700Pro/Cat 3.8's. Absolutely no problems. Never
have.

Viewsonic PF790, ATI made 9700PRO, Catalyst 3.8, desktop
running 1024x768x32bit@100Hz since the first dat the 3.8s
came out, no problems.

Viewsonic G790 19 inch (4 years old) Still calibrates with same settings as
when new.
It has used 2 Nvidia cards and 3 ATI cards, the latest being an ATI 9600
Pro.
Used all Catalyst drivers from the first to 3.8s (current), Never a problem.
BTW I always load the latest Inf files from Viesonic into windows XP, This
is a good Idea.
The only Quirk I find with the 3,8 set is that it shows 2 default monitors
and 2 G790s in device manager!
This does not seem to present any problems, But I find it wierd, have not
found a way to rectify this.
I always run at 1024 x 768, 32 colors at 100 Hz.

Yes, but this was an unproven rumour was it not? In which case, I'd have
ignored it as my paranoia level is pretty low.

Sounds good. Thanks guys.

To the flamers:

When you toss $600+ on a monitor, it's better to be safe than sorry.
(heck, when you toss $600 on ANY single PC related part...)

Sounds great.
I just ordered a P225F ; never used a trinitron screen before.
I wonder how it's longevity will be...

I bet you will be pretty thrilled with your new Viewsonic P225F , They make
great monitors and apparently the Trinitron tubes are even better than my
Shadowmask unit,
My next one will be a trinitron Tube ( if my G790 ever dies which may take
Quite a while yet) the life span on monitors seems to be 5 to 7 years, with
many 10 year olds still going strong.

Enjoy.

It's an unproven rumor but that does not mean that it is unreasonable
for someone who does not know the whole story to ask about it.

J

J.Clarke

Think about this for a minute.

Think about this for a minute--some guy who had heard this rumor came
here to find out if it was true. Do you believe that it is unreasonable
for someone who has heard something negative about an ATI product to
come to an ATI newsgroup and ask about it?
If there are ten billion ATI cards out
there and out of those ten billion cards, five people had their
monitor expire due to old age or manufacturing defects in the monitor,
could one or more of these people assume that the ATI card was at
fault?

If there was really a problem, there would be thousands of people
posting here not just a few idiots with a chip on their shoulder for
ATI or a few Nvidiots with a lot of time on their hands.

And this addresses the issue of whether it is or is not reasonable for a
person to go to an ATI newsgroup and say "I have heard that ATI boards
have been destroying monitors, is this something I should worry about?"
in what fashion?

Good point. Perhaps I should plonk you.

J

I can think of a few:
1)He has a chip on his shoulders towards ATI.
2)He broke his $600 monitor and wants ATI to pay for it.
3)He is an Nvidia troll who spends all his time in the ATI NG.
4)He has no life.

5) He's heard a rumor and he wants to get the facts. And your flaming
anybody who asks the question doesn't serve anything except maybe your
tiny little ego.

Ever heard of a warranty? No? If it's that old that the warranty is
expired then could the *gasp* Monitor have expired? God No! It cost $600!
It should last forever.

Here are a few suggestions for you dubmass:
1)Go get your new monitor.
2)Get an Nvidia card.
3)Get an extended warranty.
4)Sell your ATI card.
5)Get out of the ATI newsgroup (you don't need it anymore)
and finally
6)STFU.

Gonzo

Apparently not to the ATI web page that stated that there have been no such
cases reported.
Have you?

If you know about a reported case then feel free to share the info with us.
