capturing video

I have a Sony DVD Camcorder model 201 and the only way I can capture video is
by using the software that came with the camera. This software is limited
and hard to work with and I am trying to find out if any one else has this
problem and knows of a work around so I can download video to other programs.

Fred,

Do you have Windows XP? If so, what happens when you connect your camcorder
to the PC and turn on the camcorder on?

Here we go again.............
You can only connect via USB, Amazingly for a Sony, yours is not
equipped with a Ilink/IEEE 1394 firewire output.(?)
The USB2 connection is not for "capturing" footage but for transferring
the vob files from Disk/Cam to PC.
But to capture the DVD/vob/mpeg2 files (footage) easily and correctly
place the DVD into PC's DVD-ROM tray, and transfer the files to folder
on PC.
Once the Vob files (These are a specific type of DVD mpeg2 type file)
are in a folder on PC, you will need edit tools that can work with these
VOB files, Windows Movie Maker cannot.
I am not familiar with the software that was supplied by Sony with that
DVD cam, but I doubt it is anything more than a transfer application,
NOT video editing/conversion.

This is videohelp's tools section, there are many links and forums,
In the drop-down on this page, I opted as an example, for DVD to MPG
conversion, but you can rummage around: ie DVD to WMV etc
Once you have successfully converted the DVD vob files to either
AVI or WMV, you can edit in WMM

The bottom line being that the footage recorded to the DVD
by that particular Sony DVD camcorder is "final", and XP's
tools (WMM) and many applications cannot work with them
apart from playing back, unfortunately you will have to "invest"
in editing software for conversion and editing.
