Can't write to CD

Guest

When I try to write to the CD-ROM drive on my Dell laptop I get an error
message saying there are no supported CD recorders available. Dell Support
suggests that I need to start IMAPI CD Burning Comm Service, but this only
appears to apply to Windows XP, not to Windows 2000 Pro.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You'll need to purchase some burning software. There's nothing native along
this line with Windows 2000

I have Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 installed. I also tried a shareware package
(Cute CD DVD Burner), but got the same result.

Stupid question but do you actually have a CD Burner in the laptop? You
can't burn to a CD-ROM, you need a CD-RW.

Your problem is peculiar to Win2k: Users who do not have admin
priviledges cannot burn CDs. Here is the cure: Assuming that you have
Adaptec's current ASPI driverset installed, log on as administrator and
try to burn something. If successful, go here:

http://www.deepburner.com/?r=support&pr=faq#8

and follow the instructions given in answer to the last question on that
page.
While you're at that site is an opportunity to download a freeware
program that is head-and-shoulders more reliable than Nero.

Yes, I have admin privileges. My CD drive is a Hitachi GDR8081N, which
according to Dell Support can write to CDs. I have been trying to write to a
CD-RW without success. I can read from it OK, though.
I'm not sure if I have the Adaptec driver set - all it says when I look for
driver details is Microsoft Driver V5.0.2183.1.
I've been through the support suggestions on the Roxio website, but not
found anything applicable.
I really appreciate the advice - please keep sending it.

You may have been mislead by Dell Support. I did a Google search on that model
number and came up with a lot of listings for replacement drives but none of
them listed it as a burner. The standard description was "HITACHI/LG 8X DVD/24X
CD ATAPI/IDE DVD-ROM DRIVE".

See if you can download a user's manual for your laptop from Dell. It should
clarify its capabilities/specifications for you.

Alan,

Your drive cannot write to CDs.
It is a combo DVD-ROM and CD-ROM, and does NOT have CD-R/W capabilities.
