Can't use .wps files, what should I do?

J

Jean D.

I have a new Toshiba Satellite with Vista and Works (not sure which version,
but the date on it is 1/2005). I need to create text and rich text (rtf)
documents that do not have the .wps extension, but that's apparently the only
type this word processor has when I click "Save As". Should I update to a
new version -- if so which one? I also have a trial version of Office
installed, but I don't need anything other than a word processor.
Please help, I have a deadline to meet, and I cannot use the wps format.
Thanks.

Thanks for replying, but I don't want to buy the whole Office package unless
I have to, since all I need is a word processor that doesn't use the wps
extension. I don't know what version of Works I have but it definitely does
not give me a choice -- it's wps or nothing.

I guess my question is, what Word Processor gives me the choice of plain
doc, txt, and rft files with no ".wps" tacked on? How do I upgrade or what
should I buy, please? I can't seem to find out which version of Works I have
now. All it says under "Properties" is the date it was created (1/2005).

Since this is a new computer, I assume that you have Works 9.0. According to
"File formats that are supported in Works 9" at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940005, you should have a much greater
selection. In addition, the features page for that version
(http://www.microsoft.com/products/works/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=003&active_tab=Features)
says that you can "Share & edit Works Word Processor and Spreadsheet files
with Microsoft® Office Word and Microsoft® Office Excel and vice versa."

What I am telling you is that the Works word processor should allow you to
save in Word format or RTF or any of those other formats listed in the KB
article. Are you clicking the arrow beside the filename in the Save As
dialog to see what other formats are available?

I would imagine you can get the version of Works by using Help | About
Microsoft Works. Another KB article lists pretty much the same variety of
file formats for Works 7.0. I am confident that you can use file formats
other than .wps in any version of Works.

Even WordPad (which comes with Windows) will allow you to save as RTF.

I found the version -- 9.0. I must be doing something wrong, because
even though I select "rtf" or "text" under Save As repeatedly, it always
comes up with a wps extension when it's saved. I've tried this over and
over. I create a file, bring up "Save As," type in a title, pick an
extension, hit Save, and when I reopen the file, it always has a wps
extension attached to it. I know it's probably hard to know what I'm doing
wrong here, but any guesses?
Jean

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

No, I can't imagine what's happening. You're not typing the extension, are
you?

J

Jean D.

No, I type just the file name. At least I know now that there must be a way
to do it, and I can get help from some computer-savvy friends on Monday who
can actually walk me through it. Thanks for your help, and bye for now.

Works 9 will actually use any Office import/export filter available
including its own supplied filters, so RTF is no problem at all. What may be
causing the confusion is that the title bar of the Works 9 wordprocessor
always shows the wps extension no matter what is opened or what format is
used for the save. The saved files however should be of the correct selected
format. You can establish this by setting Windows Explorer (or whatever it
is now called in Vista) to display the extensions of known file types.

Wow, I can see how that would be misleading! What boob made that decision, I
wonder.

On the positive side if the Office compatibility pack for 2007 is installed,
the Works WP will open docx format also.

Please tell me how to change the settings so the title bar will show the
correct file type. Usually the "wps" appears at the end after the other
extension -- as in "filename.rtf.wps."

I discovered this problem when I attached files that I thought I had
saved in rtf format and they appeared with the extra extension. I also get
".docx.wps" and ".txt.wps."

Also, and maybe this is related, when I type in a file name and hit
"save as," shouldn't the title bar show that new name? I have to go back and
retype the name and resave it to get the title to change.

This sounds to me like a bug in Works, but again I would suggest that you
direct your questions to the Works newsgroup, where there are Works experts
who will be much better able to help you. I'm cross-posting this to that NG.

K

Ken

From my Works help....

Save a Works document in another program format

1 On the File menu, click Save As.

2 In the File name box, type a name for the document.

3 In the Save As type box, select the file format you want.

4 Click Save.

Hi Jean, in item 3 above "Save As type:" box, it displays Works Document
(*.wps). You need to change that to the file format you want. To do that,
click the little down arrow on the right side of the box, on it's drop down
menu click the file format you want. i.e.: 'Rich Text Format (*.rtf)'

Agreed - but the point is that it still says filename.wps in the title bar,
no matter what format it is saved in..

Hi Graham,

I have Works version 6.0 and it also displays filename.wps in the title bar
no matter what format it is saved in..

I also assume you are referring to the title bar displayed at the top of a
opened document.

As far as I know that is the way Works functions.

No matter what document that is Opened with Works Word processor it will
display filename.wps.

The problem is that I'm trying to e-mail files that were saved as "rtf"
files, but when I attach them to the e-mail, they appear with the "wps"
extension.
Why does this happen? It's driving me crazy!
Jean

S

Suzanne S. Barnhill

It may be that all you can do is send the files with a cover note telling
the recipient to edit the filename to remove the .wps extension before
trying to open (this will require saving the file to the HD--a good idea,
anyway--rather than opening it directly from the attachment).

K

Ken

Wow jean, I have never seen that happen.

First, lets make sure you can see your document file extension...

In Windows XP go to Control panel and open Folder Options or open My
Documents, choose
Tools on the menu bar, then choose Folder Options on it's menu. Either way
opens the Folder Options dialog window. Choose the View tab then uncheck
"Hide file extension for known file types".

While there you might also want to tick "Show hidden files and folders",
click OK.

In Vista, go to Control Panel, choose classic view on the left pane, open
Folder Options, click the 'view' tab, and uncheck the box for "hide
extensions for known file types".

While there you might also want to select the button to 'show hidden files
and folders'. (basically the same as doing this in XP)

Now let's create a test document...

Open Works Word processor, type "This is a test document", choose Save AS on
the File menu.

In the Save As dialog window, type "Ken test" in the File name box.

Click the down arrow for Save as type:, choose Rich Text Format(*.rtf)

The Save as type box should now display Rich Text Format(*.rtf)

Save in box probably displays My Documents, if you do not want to save the
document there then change it to your choice, click Save.

Close Works Word processor.

Open My Documents or the place you chose, you should see a document with the
name Ken test.rtf.

Close My Documents.

If all is as describe so far.... Open your email program, attach Ken
test.rtf.

Did it change to Ken test.wps?

Thanks, Ken, that does seem to work, but the rtf file that's now
attached opens with Microsoft Office Word, rather than with Works Word. (I
have a trial version of Office installed, but didn't plan to buy it.) Does
this mean I'll need to buy Office to get this to work?

When you install Word, it grabs the file association for RTF. If you didn't
have Word installed, Works would open it. You can change this.

In Windows Explorer, right-click on your RTF file and choose Open With, then
browse to Works. Make sure the box that says something like "Always use this
app to open this kind of file" is checked. This will give Works "ownership"
of that file type.
