I'm using XP pro but cannot use ping or ipconfig. TCP/IP
is installed and I can work the net with no problem. Using
ping on the Command Prompt gives the error "ping not
recognized...". When I run ipconfig the Command Prompt
screen flashes on then goes off as soon as the ipconfig is
completed. What do I do

ping and ipconfig should be in system32 folder. if not, search them and copy
them into the folder; if they are there, it could be path issue.

ping and ipconfig are in the system32 folder. when i
double click there, a prompt screen comes up briefly but
disappears before I can read it. the same thing happens
when i try from the start|run window. if i try to run from
the prompt screen i get the message ping (or ipconfig) not
recognized...

Inability to run ipconfig would make me think corrupt tcp/ip. If no other
possibility, I would re-install TCP/IP (Settings - Network Connections - Local
Area Network - Properties).

Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

I'm guessing about your problem a bit, but try this:

Run CMD, then type IPCONFIG/ALL or PING LOCALHOST in the CMD window.
