Can't update with KB890923

I can't get the Windows Update site to update Internet Explorer 6 SP1's
Critical Patch KB890923. Every time I try, it offers me this critical patch,
downloads it, but the "installation" slows to a crawl and eventually "locks
up" my PC. The Installation Bar Graph has gone right over (after a few
hours!) but it never finishes normally - it just locks up. Next time I scan
for updates, Windows Update offers me the same update again. How can I
escape this "loop"? I'm running Window ME, if that helps.

To assure a clean, troublefree install of anything (including Windows
Updates), your anti-virus application should be disabled and all other
running processes closed (e.g., IE, mail client, Office) before beginning
the install.

If I close IE, will the Installation really proceed at all? If so, at what
point in the download/install should I try to close IE? Download of the
update is almost instantaneous, whereas Install has been "locking up" after
several hours?

Also, I have a privacy program ("Internet Cleanup 2.0") which will generally
erase most remaining file traces everytime IE is closed. Will this spoil the
installation as I close IE?

Lastly, I have a Broadband (ADSL) connection (which I'm told) is somehow
"always on". How safe am I disabling Virus Scanning (Mcafee) and Firewall
(ZoneAlarm) whilst attemting to install the critical patch this way?

You can leave the IE window used to access Windows Update open, Roy. Close
all others.

With everything else closed, you're pretty kewl disabling your AV app during
the /install/ of any update. You may wish to leave it enabled during the
/download/.

See if the install completes with firewall still enabled, though. If not,
try installing with it disabled. Again, you're pretty safe with nothing but
the one IE window open.

I would disable (close) Internet Cleanup 2.0, too, before
downloading/installing. It may be part of your problem.

If problems persist, you can download the update via the Windows Update
Catalogue, saving it for installing whilst offline (with AV app, firewall,
Internet Cleanup, etc., closed):
