Can't update a XP machine through Windows Update

When I use the Windows Update option to search for updates and download it It
does not work. It open the WindowsUpdate window but than stops. It says error
on opening the page.I click on the green arrow by the URL line and get to the
next page and than stop again.. Anyway it gets up to the "quick Installation
option window but than no way to go on..... I have KB842773 and KB883357
(intelligent download) installed.
Any hints??
 
Try going to help/support in xp (start menu),then type:Windows XP Update
Catalog In the 3rd string of results you'll see."how to install updates
from catalog"
Locate,access update catalog,then click on v4update not the current v5,once
it
opens,go to the bottom of sub-menu,click on windows update See if you can
get the older version to run.
