Can't turn Windows features on or off

Vista Ultimate x64. When I go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and
Features, and click on the "Turn Windows features on or off" link, the
Windows Features window is empty. Any idea why, or more importantly, how to
get the features to be listed.

Hi, Vern.

Since you shared your problem, could you please also share the solution you
found?

When you click to "Turn...on...", how long did you wait? This can often
take several seconds, during which it seems nothing is happening, and some
users stop the process too soon.

Sure. First, yes I waited minutes for the window to populate. The reason for
this behavior is apparently due to one or more corrupted operating system
files. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/931712. The first
solution was to run "sfc /scannow". When I ran it, it reported corruption,
but also reported that it couldn't fix it. The second method is to perform a
system restore, but I don't have an old-enough restore point, so that didn't
work for me either. More Googling revealed another option of updating the OS.
But when I tried that, it reported that I had to uninstall Powershell before
I could update. I can't uninstall Powershell, and I'm guessing that it's due
to the corruption that I have. So I've resigned myself to a complete
re-install. How frustrating.

Hi, Vern.

Sorry about that. But thanks for the story of what happened. Maybe someone
here will have a clue for a better/easier fix. But sometimes things get so
tangled that a re-install is easier than trying to untangle. (Been there;
done that; more than once. <sigh> )

Some times encountering and solving problems is the best way to learn. My
number one take away here is to maintain a better set of restore points.
