Hi:

I changed to from Netzero Dial-Up to DSL and now I can't send messages.
Please help! :O) Here is the error I receive:

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was '(e-mail address removed)'. Subject 'W.C.Craig
L.L.C. House Painting', Account: 'pop.netzero.net', Server:
'smtp.netzero.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '450

We have two new Sony Vaio laptops running Win Vista Home Premium. I've been
on Cox Cable high speed I'net for years. For some reason, I cannot send any
email to anyone I have not received one from, on these new computers. I get
the same error message. Cox Cable has no idea what I'm talking about.
Microsoft passed the buck; said to contact Sony, since they loaded the OS.
Sony has no idea what I'm talking about. If it's not on these company's
computers, it doesn't exist. I've had home computerd for 20 years, and
believe me, this exists. I wonder if it has to do with the DSL or HighSpeed
format?

If I send a bulk message to 8 or 10 people and there is an address that I
have not yet received from; it will hold all the messages in the Outbox until
I delete the email address it says caused the error. This is hurting our
business. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.''Windows Mail is
disgusting; bring back Outlook Express!

I assume that (e-mail address removed) is in the To or CC field. It looks like Cox
doesn't like the names to be separated by semi-colons. Use commas instead.
If that IS the problem, I would complain to them. A comma is a normally
accepted delimiter, I've never heard of it being rejected.

On the other hand, if '(e-mail address removed) is the from field the problem is
probably that Cox will only accept a from address that is a Cox account.

On the gripping hand, you may be sending to more recipients than Cox allows.

Thank you, Frank. Yes, it's always in the To or CC field. We've frequently
sent emails to 60-100 email addresses with no problems, until we got these
new computers. I've been with Cox High Speed Cable Internet for 5 or 6
years, they have always been seperated with semicolons in OE. I will try
commas, but I don't think they will work.

Plain and simple; the problem is this: I simply cannot send any emails to a
new email address on this computer! This includes a single email, or to a
group. If there is one email address I haven't sent to on this computer, it
will not go out. Totally unreal! The problem is not only when sending group
emails, but when sending to a new person, to any email address. If it's
never been done on this computer before, it will not go out! Very
frustrating to someone who loves computers as I do.

Another thing I truly dislke about WM, is the fact that it recopies the
email address with the name after the one I type in. Seems to be dumb for WM
to take up so much space, for what has already been typed. No need to re-add
that address again.

I typed an email today to a gentleman we have corresponded with several
times on this computer, to a new email address, which would not go out.
Then, Itried his old email address, whichi he has sent me emails from in the
past, and neither would send. This problem is making computers not fun for
us anymore, can't believe what I have to do to get a new email address sent
off to someone, and it sometimes rejects those I've used before with that
same error message. People simply don't believe me when I have to call them
and tell them to send me an email so that I can send one to them! Or, I have
to get a friend running XP to send an email to them to get them to email me,
to "free up" the email address!
No one believes me, when I explain it, but it really is a problem. I;ve
always double checked, and the email address is always correct. It makes no
difference if it is to a cox.net address or AOL, or Earthlink, or asu.edu, if
an email has not been received from that email address, it will not leave the
Outbox. If that new email address in the "To" field is in with a bunch of
email addresses to whom I can send, it holds up ALL emails in the Outbox
until the suspect one is deleted, after I get that error message.

Frank, is there any sense to these answers people (not with MS, as you),
have put in on this blog, when they've had problems with emails hanging up in
the Outbox, to "reloading Windows Vista?" I don't know how I would do that,
Sony did not send us any cd's, it came already loaded. I guess I'm going to
have to send one of these computers to Sony and demand that they get it
working.

However, it's been awhile since I talked to Cox, I'll call them again as
soon as I have the time to spend on the phone, and I'll call Sony again, and
request an expert to help me, or a supervisor.

Thanks for all your help. I guess this does exist in other's WM, according
to this blog.

Appreciate any input. Thank you,

Mari

Do you have any programs checking outgoing email for viruses?

When does the duplicating of the email address occur?
As you are composing?
After the email goes to the Outbox?
When the email is trying to be sent from the Outbox?

Check your account setup.
Do you have more than one account setup?

Are you entering the address in the To or CC field or selecting the address
from the Contacts (Address Book)?

I think the duplication of the address is causing the sending problem.
It seems the semicolon of the duplicate is being included as part of the
address.

Reloading WinMail wouldn't help even if it could be done.

WinMail shows the actual contents of the To header. Outlook Express did not
show you that, but the header line was still the same as in WinMail.

I have no idea why you can't send to new addresses.

I've tried with Microsoft Outlook, which I recently loaded in with my 1 year
old MS Office Professional2003 software. I loaded it so I could use Office
without having to buy the new Office for awhile for the new computers. I put
it in after having so much trouble with WM. But I also have the same
problem. When I'm on a website, and it allows me to send a page to myself or
another email address, and I do so, it winds up in MS Outlook, and does not
send.

I'd really not like to change at this time, but if I can't get it to work,
I'll have to.

Thanks, Mari

will not go out.

Thank you,

Ron; Thanks for your reply. I'll answer your questions in order;

I have no virus program at this time, hate Norton, and have not installed
McAfee on our new computers, yet, because I've had this problem from the
get-go, and thought virus software this might create more of a problem.

The email address is automatically duplicated when I type one in; such as
this; ''
For instance, if I typed; (e-mail address removed); this automatically appears right
after it, <[email protected]>

Over the years, I've received email from people in which email addresses
were typed like that; but never had it happen to me. All of my email
addresses which I am able to type and send are like that; the duplication is
automatically added immediately after I type in an email address.

I've only set up my account on my new notebook computer, and my husband's on
his. Have the same problem with both.

I enter the address myself, in the To or CC field, because with Windows
Mail, Windows Contacts, does not automatically add the rest of the address as
I type. Frank Saunders, MS, said this was because WM only holds about the
last 25 email addresses I used. This of course, was not the case, with OE.
When you click on the email address in Windows Contacts, it does not
automatically send you into a new email message like it did in OE.

I've tried no semicolons, and commas, and nothing, and they will not send,
either.

It's been the worst problem I've ever had, in 20 years of home computers. I
always looked forward to each new OS, because I always thought it was great
fact that each new OS got better and easier to use, but not this time.

Again, Thanks, Ron; and Frank.

So Outlook has the exact same problem as Windows Mail?
This is very peculiar.

One thing, your server name, SMTP.WEST.COX.NET, should be in lower
case letters, although theoretically it's not supposed to make a difference.

Since the problem occurs only with Cox, you might try sending through a
different SMTP server. You can get a free Gmail address, which then can be
configured for POP/SMTP access. This would be a good test to see if the
Cox server is the problem.

Have you tried a different email program such as WLM or Thunderbird?

Gary VanderMolen

Thank you,

Mari

"Frank; Thank you for replying. Error Message follows; "The message
could
not be sent; the authentication setting might not be correct for your
outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this problem, go to help,
search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail," and read the "I'm having problems
sending email" section. If you need help determining the proper server
settings, please contact your email service provider.

The rejected email address was '(e-mail address removed);' subject 'Field Trip,
May,
2008', Account: 'Windows Mail', 'Server, SMTP.WEST.COX.NET; ' Protocol:
SMTP
"server response '550 (e-mail address removed); malformed address; may not follow
'(e-mail address removed); Port 25, Secure (SSL); No, Server Error, Error Number
0x800CCC79"

Frank; When I go to "Help" and look for "I'm having problems sending
email,
that heading does not exist on WM's help. It used to be on XP. I can
send
to this gentleman on my old computer, this address is correct. My most
recent email to him is hung up in my Outbox.

I seldom can send to a new person, even to cox.net; my own server. If the
person will send me an email, then it usually clears the problem, and I
can
send to them.

A common limit is 25.

Sony can't help you. At the most they might give you your money back.
Sony is at the mercy of Microsoft when it comes to Microsoft software bugs.
I don't know how far back you've read the posts in this newsgroup, but some
very sharp PC experts have struggled with these issues for about 5 months
now, with no relief in sight.

I may switch; but want to keep trying to find an answer, I haven't exhausted
all my options, yet. I could still send both computers back to Sony and let
them figure it out, and I may wind up doing just that.

Thanks, Mari

Since you are having such severe problems with Windows Mail, you
might be better off with Windows Live Mail:

Tell me about it, I know it's peculiar. I've tried lowercase on the SMTP bit
; no difference. Also have tried with Cox webmail. I'll be contacting Cox
again, soon, only have so much time each day to work on it. Today the
problem happened again, this time to someone's email address I sent to last
week. Could not send to her until I found one of her old messages to me,
then hit "Reply," then deleted the message and header and cut/pasted the
message that would not go out to her, earlier.

I really think all this may be due to Windows Contacts, which is jumbled,
and not static as with OE's Address Book. It constantly "rearranges itself."
Cannot get things separated into groups as I had in Address Book, without
them constantly mixing themselves up. It's not a very stable program.

I had NO problems with Windows Me, or XP when they first came out, and I
told everyone that. My friends say I'm jinxed, and paying the piper, now.

I did notice in these posts, that people are having problems with messages
"hanging up " in the Outbox, Gary and Frank, don't you think this sounds like
the same problem? If I don't delete the message that hangs up in Outbox, it
stays there forever, and every time I send a new message, the error message
reappears, as it also tries to send that previous one.

Lately, when I send a bulk email to more than one person, I also copy
myself, to be sure it's going out to the others, because at least one address
always hangs up, usually to someone I've sent to, before.

Thanks for trying, guys!

I haven't followed the thread...
Has the following been tried?

1. Click "Accounts" in the "Tools" menu
2. Click on your email account then click "Properties"
3. Click "Servers"
4. Make sure the "My server requires authentication" box is checked
