Can't send fax...fatal error

WIN XP SP2
USR 56k modem

I have sent faxes several months ago, but now I can't send a fax from fax
console. It dials and is answered; the "handshake" sounds begin and then
stop, and in a few moments "fatal error". This is diagnosed by fax console
as a "protocol error".

I also tried using BVPR Phone Tools program that came with my modem to send
a fax and it too failed to send, but said "unable to determine matching
speed" or something similar.
Any ideas that I may try to resolve this? Thanks.

Fax Console

After successfully faxing 1 page, it then gives error message: "An error has occurred while sending fax"

It will send Fax Console cover page and thats it. If I send a multiple page document from Word, only sends first page then same error. I upon further review I find a screen that says "fatal error"

It then tries to automatically resend the same document and the same occurs.

I have a 3Com US Robotics external modem - 5605, using serial port, using the XP driver.

All hardware Properties on the Modem checks out fine.

I have not upgraded to SP1 or SP2 or any security updates.
