Can't send e-mails using Outlook 2003

G

Guest

I just loaded Outlook 2003 on my computer yesterday and I can send an e-mail
to myself, but all other e-mails I send are returned with an error message
"not allowed". Does anyone know why? Thanks!

Are you using an outgoing mail (SMTP) server that's on your ISP's network?
Otherwise you might get the error you're seeing

G

Guest

Yes. My ISP is adelphia and the incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP) is the
same: mail.adelphia.net. I know all of the settings are correct, but for
some reason adelphia is telling me that this is a microsoft issue.

Thanks!

Do you have the text of the error message that you're getting?

G

Guest

Yes, it's...

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: RE: excited
Sent: 8/1/2007 10:04 AM

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

'Posso, Jaye' on 8/1/2007 10:04 AM
550 relaying mail to SCOTTSDALEAZ.GOV is not allowed

And, I get this message whether the recipient is at a yahoo.com,
sbcglobal.net, gmail.com address, etc.

Does Adelphia require authentication to their mail server?

That's normally the error you see when you're not on the network containing
the SMTP server you're trying to use.

When you say "not on the network" do you mean not on the adelphia network?
Does that mean I would only be able to send e-mail using their webmail
service? I can receive e-mail via Outlook no problem...the problem is just
sending them. Also, why would I be able to send an e-mail to myself without
getting the error message, but not to anybody else? Because they're no using
adelphia e-mail? So, is this an adelphia problem or Microsoft problem?
Thanks!

You must be on the Adelphia network to use their SMTP server in your
Outlook. If you are connected to the Internet via an ISP other than
Adelphia, you can't use their SMTP server.

Are you on the Adelphia network while trying to send mail?

Yes, our ISP is adelphia...our modem is from adelphia. We're also wireless.
I just got a new computer so am setting up my new Outlook configurations and
that's when all of this started happening. On my old computer, using Outlook
2000, I did not have this problem. My husband uses Outlook 2003 and he
doens't have this problem either. Do you think this is an adelphia problem
or a microsoft problem? Thanks!

T

I don't think it's necessarily an Adelphia problem or a MS problem. It
could be the wireless setup, could be a firewall issue, could be an
anti-virus/anti-spam set up issue.

Whomever installed or configured them.

| Who would I contact to see if it's either of these issues? Thanks!

It was adelphia who set up the modem, so I'll call them again. Just as a
test I sent an e-mail to another adelphia customer and that one went through
ok...it's just the ones that don't have adelphia. Thanks!

They specifically told me not to check that box when I was setting
everything
up.

They are assuming the e-mail client will reuse the login credentials
from the POP3 session (performed first) for the later SMTP session.
However, if enough time elapses to do the POP3 yanking of e-mails then
those cached credentials aren't available for the SMTP session. Also,
some e-mail clients send before receiving. Enable the option to
authenticate to the SMTP server and first try the option to reuse the
credentials from the POP3 setup. If that doesn't work then use the
option to use separate login credentials and simply specify the same
ones as for the POP3 setup.

By the way, if you are posting these Usenet messages using the same
network (ISP) as you are trying to use e-mail then you are NOT using
Adelphia's network. You are posting from MSN, not from Adelopha
(207.46.192.207 belongs to MSN). In that case, you ARE trying to use an
off-domain mail server (hosts on Adelphia's network are off-domain to
Microsoft's network). You will need to use MSN's mail hosts, or you
need to see if you can use a port other than 25 for SMTP (outbound)
because maybe MSN is blocking off-domain mail traffic using the standard
port 25. Could be Adelphia doesn't permit off-domain access to their
mail hosts (you coming from MSN's network is off-domain to Adelphia's
network). Maybe they permit an alternate config for connecting to their
mail hosts when you are off-domain, like using 995 for POP3, 465 for
SMTP, and requiring SSL is enabled for both.

You are posting from MSN. You are trying to reach Adelphia's mail hosts
while coming from MSN's network. MSN may not let you cross their
network for mail traffic. Adelphia may not permit connects from off
their domain.
