Can't select Outlook Express as program IE uses for rmail

I tried using Outlook 97 with Windows XP, but decided I preferred Outlook
Express. Now that I've uninstalled Outlook (& all of Office 97), when I
click on
an email address in Internet Explorer, instead of starting Outlook Express 6
(which does say it's the default email) it comes up with an internet email
message: "Choose Profile" which gives Microsoft Outlook as a selection. How
do I get rid of the reference to Outlook? I've even tried RegCleaner to clear
all trace of it!

When I go to
Internet Explorer | Tools | Internet options | Program,
only Microsoft Outlook comes up as an option! How can I restore OE as an
option which I would then select, so that when I click on email links in IE,
OE creates a new blank email message?

I found the answer on the Microsoft Support website. Use this only if the
normal user options don't work:

Part 1
Outlook Express was not set as the default mail program, nor available as an
option. To set it:

To add the data string to the default mail client key:

1. Start Registry Editor; click Start, click Run, and then type "regedit"
(without the quotation marks).

2. Locate the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express

3. In the left pane, click Outlook Express. Two values should be displayed in
the right pane: one is Default, which has a value of Outlook Express, and
the
other is DLLPath, which contains the path to Msoe.dll on your computer.

4. If the DLLPath value is not present, click Edit, point to New, and then
click
String Value.

5. New Value #1 is displayed, with the text selected. Type "DllPath" (without
the quotation marks), and then press the ENTER key.

6. Double-click the new DLLPath value to open it. In the Value Data box, type
the path to the Msoe.dll file on your computer, for example:

<drive>:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSOE.DLL

Part 2
After Outlook is the default client in Internet Options, it may not be
default
within the program itself.
Open Outlook and go to Tools menu, Options. In the General tab, it may say
"This program is NOT the default Mail handler". Click the make default
button to correct
this.
