Can't see Computers Near Me

S

sam

I've all of sudden lost the ability to browse other computers, when i
go to Computers near me. I just get and error,

I can ping by IP and UNC, i can access the shared folders by UNC, ex.
\\kate\documents and \\wayne\files. I can access the internet via the
router. I can search for the computer names in windows, and it finds
them, but i cannot browse through the Network Places. For now i've
created an icon on the desktop that takes me to the folders, like
\\kate\documents.

I've rebooted, got all users on all of the computers. I think it
happend all of a sudden when i logged the last user on the last
computer, but i'm not exactly sure.

I've got everyone on the same workgroup. Do i need a domain instead?
How do switch if I do?

They are three win2k, all the same make, model,

I just want to be able to browse My Network Places, and have their
computers come up, and access the comptuers.

Thanks,
Sam

Hope someone has a solution, I'm here looking for answers to a similar
problem. I had a laptop that was happy in the net. Got a new laptop, but
couldn't see it in desktop Explorer. Could ping both ways, could see laptop
from desktop and access it, but laptop gets a "logon type not allowed".
Hooked up old laptop, it's getting the same lockout treatment. Obviously
something has changed. Desktop is set for sharing to everyone.

Will appreciate direction to a good network debug site.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers (W2K/XP's). Got File- and printersharing loaded? Is
Netbios over TCP/IP enabled (Advanced properties of TCP/IP, tab WINS)?

Marina, yes to all of your suggestions.

The reason I thing something is funny at the primary desktop (w2K, x.x.x.2)
is that the new laptop (W2K, x.x.x.4) can see a secondary workgroup desktop
(W2K, x.x.x.3) and access it, but neither the old or new laptop can now
access the primary desktop, while the old laptop (W2K, x.x.x.1)was happy
going on and off the LAN prior to trouble starting. Everybody can ping
everyone else successfully, it seems to be a security lockout issue for the
laps, only, to get into the primary desktop.

What's this master browser election being forced in the event log?

I'm bamboozeled.

Thx for your comments.

Generally that means that the user right assignment for access this computer
from the network or deny access this computer from the network in Local
Security Policy/security settings/local policies/user right assignments is
confiured to not allow access for a user/group. Check that the everyone
group is included in the allow access and that there is no user/group in the
deny acess user right on the desktop. --- Steve

What please are the recommended settings for TCP/IP in the advanced area?

Does it make a difference with a router?

I have a four client network running off a Siemens router, peer to peer (I
think) all W2K.

Wow, that was easy, when you get the right direction!

I swear that I had checked several times to be sure that I had "everyone"
access on the primary desktop, and that was OK.

Following the command sequence described, it looked different than what I
remembered, and it worked.

Thx, pjl
