Can't search windows files

Something is wrong with the search function in windows.
When I try to search the left sidebar is blank (no search
criteria and no little puppy dog).

How do I get this function reinstalled?

I had to get rid of a number of invading spyware programs
recently and I had deleted some registry info. Along with
some startup items.
