can't save your changes to this bound OLE object

I have a simple database that I have embedded excel files for
reference. Whenever I open one of the files, even without making
changes, I get the following error: can't save your changes to this
bound OLE object.

I'm not interested in editing the embedded files, in fact, I'd prefer
to lock them so no edits can be done.

Any suggestions to prevent this error from occuring?
